Ian Middleton, CFP®, has close to three decades of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to starting his journey with Masthead in 2003, as a member of the concept team, he filled various positions at Old Mutual. From 2004, he served as Masthead’s chief operating officer and in 2008 was appointed managing director.
Ian has a BA LLB from Wits and an Executive MBA from UCT. He completed the Leading Effective Sales Force programme at INSEAD Business School in France, and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® /CFP® professional. He is a past president of the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) and was a member of the FPI Board for 12 years. He has chaired various committees, including the FPI Examination Committee. He also served as a director on the board of the US-based Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), for two years.
Ian currently participates in a number of committees that engage and influence industry issues, namely: the Financial Service Board (FSB) Steering Committee on Market Conduct Regulatory Framework (where one of the key considerations is Retail Distribution Review [RDR]); the FSB Competency Framework workgroup; FSB’s Consumer Education workgroup; the FSB Risk Profiling/Analysis workgroup; and a number of the RDR work streams. He also sits on the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA) Distribution Affairs Committee, where he engages with life and investment product suppliers from an advisor perspective.
Ian believes deeply in the benefits of face-to-face financial advice and feels strongly about striking a balance between (1) suitable customer advice, (2) appropriate and cost-effective regulation and (3) sustainable advisory practices. In following this drive, he has had numerous articles published in the field of financial advice, co-authored a book on Retirement and Estate Planning, and has conducted a number of media interviews on regulatory matters affecting financial advisors.
In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf, watching sport, reading sports-related biographies and taking time out on his Harley-Davidson.
